3 Free Places for DJs to Promote Themselves Online
No one tells you when you start about how much you have to work as a DJ if you actually want to make it. You learn the skills get a solid residency and think thats the job done.
“Now all to do is tour the Country and I’m a pro.”
Well I hate to break it to you, it’s going to take a lot more then that. Here are a few places I recommend when looking to build your fanbase online.
1. HYPEEDIT
Hypeddit, Is one of the most popular download gates today. It owes its success to its ‘Top 100 Charts” feature which enables you to accumulate a huge amount of plays, of course only if your track is good enough and you climb the charts.
FEATURES

SoundCloud repost and comment

Auto promotion through Top 100 charts
2. TIKTOK
In the three years since its launch, TikTok has accumulated 500 million active users worldwide placing it in 9th position behind the big dogs.
Getting your music on TikTok is super easy and this can be done one of two ways. The first being through a distributor or Apple Music but we ain’t about that pay to play life this is all about free. So we choose the second which is simply uploading it yourself.
Anyone can upload their own audio to the app and then this can be searched and used by others. People are literally becoming overnight stars right now on this app. Whether you have an audience or not if you put in the work on this app you can build a fanbase.
1: Upload a video with the clip of that track in that you want to use.
2: Click the profile photo in the bottom right hand corner
3: Name your sound, so you’ll want to go with the ‘Track Name – Artist Name’ so it’s easy for others to find
3. REDDIT
Now I’ve left this one to last as it requires a lot more time, consistency and hard work but it can actually produce the biggest results. At 330 million active users Reddit is one of the largest forums on the internet for fans of anything and everything.
We’re just here for the Music community though. So where do we get started? Obviously start a profile and then…
1. Start Your Own Subreddit
This is like your own personal channel. You can name your subreddit after your DJ name, group name, or you could go broader. For example, you can name it “Brisbane DJs”.
The main goal of this is to form a community for you to post your music in. A smart idea would be to grab a few mates that are artists and all work on the same subreddit. Make your first few posts I’d “self-post”. If you’re unfamiliar with Reddit, a “self-post” is simply a post that contains text instead of redirecting to an external website. You want to look non spammy and “Self-post” make it more likely for people to take interest if they stumbled upon it.
2. Join a More Active Subreddit
Next, you should join an active subreddit like /r/MusicProduction and start contributing to the discussion. There are 57k+ users in that subreddit right now all interested in new music, looking for new people to connect with.
What typically happens on Reddit is that the more active you are, the more people become interested in you as a person. The most interesting thing about reddit and how it works is since you don’t have a big profile with a lot of information about you, users will usually look at your previous post history to learn about you. This has an onflow effect pushing old posts (music) to the surface as you slowly gain more traction in the community.
The more engaged you are in a subreddit, the more people will actually click your username and check out your post history. So as you've been posting in the subreddit that you created, with your own music and some information about yourself, people will begin viewing your post history will also check those out.
3. Engage But Don’t Spam
In some subreddits, they host weekly competitions, opportunities to get feedback on your music and collab, and more. When presented with the opportunity to promote your music directly, feel free to do so if it won’t come across as spammy.

Reddit tactics could easily be switched out for Facebook but I feel like most users have become a bit bored of facebook. So even though these tactics would work the same sometimes using a new platform can teach you something new or even remind you how good you had it.
